Joan (Meyers) Glover
I was introduced to the gourd one day while cleaning out the garage. I asked Mike what we were suppose to do with these things, and what the heck are they? He explained to me that he grew the gourds in order to make birdhouses. Well, it seemed that 100 bird houses would be over kill for our property, so I began researching the gourd at the public library and, to my amazement, it is definitely more than just a bird house!
I am happily overwhelmed with all the many things a gourd can be used for. My only wish is that I had more time to work on them. I am like the kid who gets the toy catalog at Christmas when my American Gourd Society magazine comes in the mail. Needless to say, the girls get less attention that day.

Mike was raised in Hayesville, NC (NC Smokey Mountains) and was taught farming from his father. Even with several business "adventures" Mike always found the time to raise chickens and work in his garden. Our garden is immaculate! No weeds, no bugs, clean isles and the most beautiful organic veggies! Mike hand pollinates our gourds and hand removes any signs of insects. Mike is a retired professional King Mackerel fisherman and an avid volunteer for the Little River Fishing Club and Ducks Unlimited.
